Computed Tomography (CT), also known as a “CAT scan” (Computed Axial Tomography), is a painless, noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses special X-ray equipment and computer processing to create detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike conventional X-rays that only show a 2D image, CT scans create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues inside your body. These images can then be viewed on a monitor, printed, or transferred to a digital medium.
During a CT scan, you will lie on a table that moves through a circle-shaped machine called a gantry. Inside the gantry, an X-ray tube rotates around you and sends narrow beams of X-rays through your body. Instead of film, CT scans use digital detectors to record the X-rays as they pass through the body.
A computer processes this information to create cross-sectional images (slices). These slices are then digitally “stacked” to form a detailed 3D image of organs, bones, or blood vessels. This allows doctors to see inside the patient’s body without surgery.
