Fibroids are benign tumours that develop in the uterus’ various layers. The term “leiomyoma” refers to tumours that develop from the uterus’ smooth muscles. They can manifest as a single, solitary tumour or as a collection of tumours of various sizes and places, but they are not malignant. Less than 0.5% of women will develop a malignant uterine tumour, and possibly even less frequently.2 These fibroids need blood flow to survive, and since the uterine artery provides the majority of their blood supply, they can continue to enlarge if left untreated.
